All five exits closed with a gain for co-owners. The average realised net return was +19.8% per exit, after all fees. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.

This article looks at the man behind Artemundi, the partnership with Splint Invest, the current portfolio and every exit in detail.

Who is Javier Lumbreras?

Javier Lumbreras is the founder, CEO and chairman of Artemundi. He founded the company in 1989. He is one of the pioneers of art as a financial asset class.

Lumbreras was born near Arévalo in Spain and grew up in Madrid. He studied political science and business administration in the United States. He then worked for many years in Miami and later in New York. He also studied art history at the Institute of Fine Arts in New York.

His career combines finance and art. He is a certified appraiser and the author of the book The Art of Collecting Art. He has also chaired the Art Fund Association.

  • Over USD 1 billion in art managed: According to Artemundi, the firm has managed more than USD 1 billion in art and completed thousands of transactions.

  • Artemundi Global Fund (2010–2015): Artemundi reports assets under management of about USD 220 million, a net five-year return of 85.4% and an IRR of 17.4%.

  • Early mover in tokenisation: In 2021, Artemundi and Sygnum Bank tokenised Pablo Picasso's Fillette au béret (1964). The painting was valued at CHF 4 million and split into 4,000 tokens.

At the time, Lumbreras said: "The art market is absurdly opaque and inefficient, but these traits will soon be relics of a bygone age."

Javier Lumbreras as a collector

Lumbreras is not only an investor. He is also a passionate collector. He began collecting as a schoolboy. Together with his wife, Lorena Pérez-Jácome, he built the Adrastus Collection. It holds around 1,000 works by about 150 artists from 40 countries.

The couple is developing Collegium, a contemporary art institution in Arévalo. It will be located on the site of a former 16th-century Jesuit school. In 2023, they received the ARCO "A" Award for collecting from Fundación ARCO.

"Art expresses what cannot be said in any other way," Lumbreras told Apollo Magazine.

What is Artemundi's investment approach?

Artemundi focuses on established, blue-chip art. The firm buys Impressionist, Modern, Post-War and late 20th-century works. It avoids speculative and emerging artists.

  • Established names: Artists with a long auction history and broad institutional recognition.

  • Data-driven selection: Decisions are based on auction data, artist performance and market cycles.

  • Clear horizons: Artemundi offerings on Splint Invest typically have a planned investment horizon of two to four years.
