How to Track the Value of Your Collection
Tracking the value of a collection means combining several signals, not relying on a single number. An estimated valuation is not the same as a completed sale.
Use periodic valuations
Many collectible categories are revalued periodically by specialists rather than priced continuously like a stock. Splint Invest, for instance, updates asset valuations on a periodic basis using comparable sales and expert input, not daily price feeds.
Watch comparable sales
The most reliable signal for most collectibles is a recent sale of a similar item: same artist or producer, similar condition, similar edition or vintage. Auction results and dealer sales both provide comparable data points.
Check market indices where they exist
Some categories, such as fine wine and certain art segments, have published indices that track average price movements. These indices are useful for a general market direction, but they rarely reflect the value of one specific item precisely.
Understand what changes a valuation
Valuations typically move because of:
- New comparable sales at a higher or lower price.
- Changes in condition, such as damage or restoration.
- Shifts in collector demand for the artist, producer or category.
- Broader market conditions, including currency movements for international buyers.
Set realistic expectations for frequency
Collectible valuations do not update daily. Expect updates on a periodic basis — for example, quarterly or annually depending on the category and platform — rather than in real time.
Is an estimated valuation the same as what I would receive on sale?
No. An estimated valuation reflects current market data. The actual sale price depends on finding a buyer and can be higher or lower.
How often does Splint Invest update valuations?
Splint Invest reviews and updates asset valuations periodically, using comparable sales, expert appraisals and market conditions specific to each category.
